The Heart of Teesdale

I believe we have something,
something bigger than ourselves.

Beginning in 2013 with a working title of "Teesdale through the Seasons", the project was an opportunity to explore the cyclical nature of life within the dale. Over 18 months, with the support of Artworks in Teesdale and funded through the Heart of Teesdale Landscape Partnership, I was able to develop an aesthetic relationship between the ever-changing landscape and the lives of those that bear witness to it.

The concept of the project was to interpret the working title with 4 distinct voices - a human representation of the seasons. Each narrator has spent their life in Teesdale, all with unique, intimate relationships with the landscape: a farmer, a landscape artist, a community worker/green activist and a botanist. Spanning gender, age range and experience, these four voices describe very personal attitudes towards this remarkable area.

The project also allowed me to focus on the development of an ambient soundtrack to accompany the film, capturing the sounds of Teesdale and using these elements; the movement of trees, plants, rain and fire to build a haunting soundscape that weaves together voice and image.
